The tree reaches a height of more than 50 m with a straight cylindrical bole to 26 m in length. The trunk diameter attains 100 to 120 cm above the tall, symmetrical buttresses.
The genus is widespread in tropical Africa, particularly common in parts of East Africa.
Wood diffuse porous. Vessels in radial multiples of 2 to 4. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 to 150 micras (small). Non-vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 10 to 20 (abundant). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits coarse in marginal rows. Intervessel pi Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Axial parenchyma in continuous tangential lines or fine bands. Crystal sand in axial parenchyma cells. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays non-storied. Rays 1 to 4 seriate. Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The heartwood is yellowish white to pale brown or pinkish brown, it is not clearly demarcated.

The wood is described as moderate in luster.
Slightly durable to decay. This species needs preservative treatment for uses with risks of occasional re-humidification. It is not suited for uses with risks of permanent or long-lasting humidification. The heartwood is sensible to termites and Lyctus attack.
