The tree reaches a height of 20 to 30 m. The bole is fluted, often buttressed to a height of 1.7 m. The bole may occasionally be up to 20 m in length. The trunk diameter attains 70 up to 150 cm.
Hexalobus crispiflorus occurs in deciduous and fringing forests, along river-flats and in the savanna zones of the Guineas.
Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 micras or less (very small). Non-vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 10 to 20 (abundant). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to interv Axial parenchyma scalariform. Non-crystals in axial parenchyma cells. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays non-storied. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The heartwood is brown, pink or pale yellow, it is not clearly demarcated. Stripy figure on the quarter-cut and back sawn faces.
Straight; grain has no particular influence on drying, machining and finishing qualities.
Fine texture is reported in this species.
