Juglans includes deciduous trees without buttresses, up to 30 m tall.
Juglans trees are distributed in the subtropical and temperate montane forests of Central and South America.
Wood diffuse porous. Vessels solitary and in short radial multiples. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 150 to 200 micras (medium). Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. I Axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Axial parenchyma in discontinuous tangential lines. Prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays 1 to 4 seriate. Heterogeneous rays and/or multiseriate heterogeneous rays. Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.

Heartwood of timbers in this species is reported to vary in color from dark gray brown with a pink tinge, to dark brown or reddish brown with fine veins. It is less pronounced than European and Asian Juglans.
