The trees are reported to reach heights of 30 m, with trunk diameters that can go up to 180 cm. They develop straight and cylindrical boles. It presents buttresses of 2.5 m tall and 5 to 15 cm in thickness. Over mature trees are often hollow in the base.
A tall tree of primary lowland rainforest, it is reported to be one of the most abundant species in the north-western forests of Ecuador.
The geographical range for this species is the north-western forests of Ecuador and the southern-western forests of Colombia.
Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more (large). Colored deposits in heartwood vessels. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Axial parenchyma aliform. Axial parenchyma confluent.

This species has a pleasant smell even after drying.
The sapwood is not clearly differentiated, the heartwood is yellow with dark yellowish brown bands when dry.
Interlocked grain is reported in this species.
This species is reported to have a medium to coarse texture.
The wood surfaces tend to be moderately to highly lustrous
