The tree reaches a height of 30 m, with trunk diameters from 130 up even to 200 cm. The bole is straight, unbuttressed, cylindrical, up to 16 m in length.
Pteleopsis hylodendron occurs in dense rain forests, in the highlands and in secondary formations.
Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 to 150 micras (small). Tyloses thin walled. Vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 10 to 20 (abundant). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Axial parenchyma lozenge-aliform. Prismatic crystals in short chains in chambered axial parenchyma cells. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays non-storied. Rays 1 to 2 seriate. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The sapwood is pale grey-brown, it has a thickness of 7.5 to 10 cm. The heartwood is green-grey turning grey-yellow on exposure. dark or black streaks present, it is not clearly demarcated.
