Descrição botânica
Small to medium size tree, it rarely exceeds 18 m in length and 150 cm in girth. The bole is usually fluted.

Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Wood diffuse porous. Vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Colored deposits in heartwood vessels. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 micras or less (very small). Axial parenchyma bands more than 3 cells wide. Rays storied. Ray width 1 to 3 cells.

Cor
The heartwood is dark purplish-brown with very dark brown to black streaks and is clearly demarcated from the 3-5 cm thick whitish to yellowish sapwood.
