The tree is slightly buttressed. The bole is straight and cylindrical, may be up to 20 m in length. The trunk diameter attains 80 cm.
Trichilia tessmannii is sporadically present in evergreen and semi-deciduous forests.
West Africa, from Sierra Leone to Cabinda and to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 to 150 micras (small). Non-vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 6 to 10 (medium). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pit Axial parenchyma aliform. Axial parenchyma confluent. Prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays non-storied. Rays 1 to 2 seriate. Silica bodies in the ray cells. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal ce Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The heartwood is pinkish grey, it is not clearly demarcated.

The wood is typically fine in texture.
Not durable; important risks of decay attacks at any processing step, from logs up to final products. It must receive preservative treatment. Sensible to termites attack. The heartwood is sensible to Lyctus attacks.
