It attains heights from 15 to 30 m, with a diameter at breast height between 60 to 80 cm.
Platonia insignis is found in open areas in secondary forests, rarely in primary forests. It grows in almost pure stands on a wide range of soils, but always on humid areas. It is reported to be abundant in the low Amazonas and the Marajo island.
This species occurs in the Amazonia.
Wood diffuse porous. Vessels solitary and in short radial multiples. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more (large). Colored deposits in heartwood vessels. Tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray Axial parenchyma apparent with the naked eye. Axial parenchyma in thick bands. Occasionally prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial parenchyma cells. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Axial parenchyma bands more than 3 cells wide. Axial parenchyma bands un 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays 1 to 4 seriate. Occasionally prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Heterogeneous rays and/or multiseriate heterogeneous rays. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The heartwood is usually yellow brown to orange brown in color with grayish streaks, distinct from the yellowish white sapwood.

Texture is usually medium to coarse.
The wood surface is described as moderate in luster.
It is durable against fungi attack. This species is rated as resistant against termite attack. It is not attacked by Lyctus.
