The tree reaches a height of 9 to 24 m, with Trunk diameters up to 80 cm. The bole is usually straight , tapered and unbuttressed.
Amblygonocarpus andongensis is common in the moist savanna woodlands near the coast but also present in open forest and in the higher plateaus.

Colored deposits in heartwood vessels. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforatio Axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Axial parenchyma lozenge-aliform. Axial parenchyma confluent. Non-crystals in axial parenchyma cells. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays non-storied. Rays commonly 2 seriate. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The sapwood is grey-white. The heartwood is dark-brown or red, darkening on exposure, it is clearly demarcated.
Wavy or slightly interlocked; special care is needed when machining in order to obtain satisfying quality surface.
Fine texture is reported in this species.
This wood is commonly of low luster.
Very durable to decay; without preservative treatment. This species is especially suited for all the uses with risks of permanent or long-lasting humidification. Resistant to termites attack. Heartwood is resistant to Lyctus attacks.
