The trees are reported to reach heights of 30 to 35 m. The bole is cylindrical, without buttresses, up to 20 m long, with diameters of 100 cm at breast height.
Catostemma commune is found in the tropical rain forests, on well drained soils.
The natural growth range of this species is Central America and northern South America. It is reported in Panama, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil.
The wood of this species presents gum streaks.

Axial parenchyma in thick bands. Axial parenchyma storied. Prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial parenchyma cells. 3 to 4 cells per pare Rays less than 4 per mm (rare). Larger rays width 0. 1 mm or more and 2 mm or more in height. Rays storied. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Occasionally prismatic crystals in the ray cells. The sapwood is pale yellow, the heartwood gradually turns into yellowish brown color.
