The mature tree is small to medium, attaining heights of 20 m or more, and trunk diameters of about 70 cm. The trees often develop straight cylindrical or sometimes slightly fluted boles that are free of branches for about 15 m.
The species is reported in northern South America, from Panama down to Brazil and Peru.
Wood diffuse porous. Vessels solitary and in short radial multiples. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more (large). Tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in s Axial parenchyma reticulate. Prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. Axial parenchyma in narrow bands on lines up to 3 cells wide. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays 1 to 4 seriate. Prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

It is reported to have a typical unpleasant smell when freshly cut.
The sapwood is white, the heartwood is light yellow with pink stripes.
The grain is frequently straight.
This wood has a somewhat coarse texture.
The wood surfaces tend to be slightly to moderately lustrous
