Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

The tree reaches a height of 20 to 46 m, with trunk diameters from 70 to 100 cm. The bole is rarely straight, often twisted and branched, but in large specimen it can be 30 m long. Small buttresses are present at the base of the tree.

Natural Habitat

Corynanthe pachyceras is found in the understorey of evergreen forest, often in groups, or as a co-dominant in primary forests.

Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 micras or less (very small). Vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 more than 20 (very abundant). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pi Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Non-crystals in axial parenchyma cells. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays non-storied. Rays 1 to 4 seriate. Heterogeneous rays and/or multiseriate heterogeneous rays. Non-septate fibers. Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.

General Wood Description

Color

The heartwood is pale pink with yellow tinge, turning yellow brown with age, it is not demarcated. The silver figure is ribbon-like.

Grain

Straight or slightly interlocked, sometimes with an influence on further processing operations.

Texture

This species is usually reported to have a fine texture.

Natural Durability

Slightly durable to decay. This species needs preservative treatment for uses with risks of occasional re-humidification. It is not suited for uses with risks of permanent or long-lasting humidification. Resistant to termites attack.

Natural durability index (1= Very high durability, 7=Vey low durability)
