Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

It is a small to medium-sized tree up to 30 m tall. The bole is irregularly cylindrical, branchless for up to 15 m, 100 cm in diameter, not prominently flanged at base.

Natural Habitat

A timber species, which in New Guinea is mainly confined to the Bulolo/Wau region of Morobe Province. It is a subcanopy tree, occurs in monsoon forests and dry to wet lowland forests or lower montane rainforests, from the sea level up to 1,200 m of altitu

Natural Distribution

It is a native of Queensland from Tweed River to Atherton district, occurs also in Marobe District of Papua New Guinea.

Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more. Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Vessels per mm2 more than 20 (very abundant). Simple perforation plates. Occasionally intervessel pits small, 7 micras or less. Intervessel pits Axial parenchyma absent or extremely rare, non visible with magnifying glass (8x). Occasionally apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Occasionally paratracheal axial parenc 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Occasionally rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Ray height more than 1 mm. Occasionally larger rays more than 4 seriate. Occasionally sheath cells. Body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cel Septate fibers present. Fibers very thin walled. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.
