The tree reaches a height of about 30 m. The bole is variable, sometimes up to 20 m in length. The trunk diameter attains 130 to 150 cm.
West and Central Africa, sporadically from Sierra Leone to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 to 150 micras (small). Tyloses thin walled. Non-vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 more than 20 (very abundant). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays non-storied. Rays 1 to 4 seriate. Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The sapwood is grey with a copper sheen. The heartwood is pink or red-brown. The timber is characterized by numerous pith flecks noticeable as dark lines (2.5 to 5 cm) long, it is clearly demarcated. It has a mottled or broken stripe figure.

The grain is slightly but systematically interlocked; special care is needed when drying because of frequent risks of distortion.
The wood is frequently reported to be fine textured.
It is reported to be low in luster.
Very durable to decay; without preservative treatment. This species is especially suited for all the uses with risks of permanent or long-lasting humidification. Resistant to termites attack. Heartwood is resistant to Lyctus attacks.
