It is a deciduous, monoecious, small to medium-sized trees up to 30 m tall. The bole is columnar to sinuous, up to 60 cm in diameter, sometimes fluted at base or with steep buttresses.
Sapium species are found scattered in well drained primary and secondary evergreen to deciduous rain forests, up to 800 m of altitude.
Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels in radial multiples of 4 or more common. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more (large). Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Intervessel pits medium, Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Siliceous bodies in the axial parenchyma cells. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Over 9 cells per parenchyma strand. Axial parenchyma in narrow bands on lines up to 3 cells wide. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Ray height more than 1 mm. Rays exclusively uniseriate. Silica bodies in the ray cells. All ray cells upright and/or square. Body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-I). Fibers very thin walled. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The heartwood is pale yellow-brown, not clearly differentiated from the sapwood.
The grain is straight to deeply interlocked, occasionally wavy.
The texture is moderately coarse and even.
It is non-durable under exposed conditions.
