Piptadenia buchananii Bak. f.
The tree reaches a height of 40 m. The bole is cylindrical, straight and up to 20 m in length. Felling shakes can occur. Buttresses may be up to 4 m. The trunk diameter attains 100 cm over the short buttresses.
Newtonia buchananii is common in mountain forests up to 2,000 m, as well as in riverine and swamp forests.
Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 150 to 200 micras (medium). Vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays non-storied. Rays 1 to 2 seriate. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Occasionally septate fibers present. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The sapwood is grey-white, it has a thickness of 5 cm. The heartwood is brown, darkening on exposure to golden brown, it is clearly demarcated.
Straight or slightly interlocked, sometimes with an influence on further processing operations.
This species is usually reported to have a fine texture.
This wood is commonly of low luster.
Not durable; important risks of decay attacks at any processing step, from logs up to final products. It must receive preservative treatment. Sensible to termites attack. The heartwood is sensible to Lyctus attacks.

Residual stresses present in the wood may cause defects while processing the timber.
Nearly impossible to treat with a too much low penetration of the preservative substances.
