It is a medium-sized tree growing to 30 m and attaining 50 cm in diameter. The bole is very long, cylindrical, with no buttresses or with very low, simple, rounded and inconspicuous buttresses.
Polyscias nodosa is found scattered in primary or more often in secondary evergreen or deciduous forests, up to 1,000 m of altitude.
Wood diffuse porous. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. Intervessel pits large, 10 micras or more. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Body ray cells procumbent with one row of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-III). Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.

The heartwood is pale to pinkish buff, not clearly differentiated from the sapwood.
Straight grain is reported in this species.
The wood is frequently reported to be fine textured.
The wood is fairly durable for interior work, but very perishable when exposed to the weather or in contact with the ground. It is susceptible to dry wood termites.
