Description Of The Tree
Botanical Description
Small to fairly large trees, up to 40 m tall and up to 70 cm in diameter, often with small buttresses or stilt roots.
Natural Habitat
Xylopia fusca is a typical element of swamp forests.

Anatomic Description Of Wood
Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more. Occasionally vessels with colored deposits. Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Occasionally two cells per parenchyma strand. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. Occasionally 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Axial parenchyma in narrow bands on lines up to 3 cells wide. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Ray height more than 1 mm. Occasionally larger rays more than 4 seriate. Occasionally body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-I). Occasionally body ray cells procumbent with mostl Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.
