Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

It is a unarmed, small to medium-sized tree, up to 30 m tall, with 85 cm in diameter. The bole is cylindrical to irregular, branchless for 18 m, usually with prominent buttresses up to 4 m high.

Natural Habitat

This species is mainly found in keranga forests. Sympetalandra borneensis is reported in primary evergreen rain forests up to 600 m of altitude.

Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels with colored deposits. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 to 200 micras. Vestured pits. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. Simple perforation plates. Axial parenchyma aliform. Axial parenchyma confluent. Axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays 1 to 4 seriate. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.
