Moivi (Fiji)
Boles average 12 m in length, but some trees may have poor form.Logs are sinkers.
Trees are found in hills and occasionally in semi-swanp forests.
Common in Fiji
Moivi is a hard, heavy species considered suitable for constructional timber, where nailing is not involved, in low decay hazard situations. Could be used for permanent heavy construction after treatment.
Vessels per mm2 6 to 10 (medium). Occasionally vessels per mm2 less than 6. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 to 150 micras (small). Vessels in radial multiples of 2 to 4. Occasionally axial parenchyma in thick bands. Axial parenchyma in continuous tangential lines (included in reticulate and scalariform). Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Axial parenchyma confluent.
Unrestricted
Heartwood color ranges from brown to red with black streak common. Sap-wood is pale brown to pink.
3
The grain straight or moderately interlocked.
Texture is intermediate. Growth rings distinct. Tyloses sparse or absent, deposits common.
Sapwood is susceptible to Lyctus attack. Heartwood is not durable rated adequate only for hazard 1 end uses. Timber out of ground contact, continuously protected from the weather. Sapwood permeable, heartwood extremely resistant to pressure treatment.
4
Tension wood may be a feature of some logs.

Moivi is harder than normal saw and may be below dressing quality because of black heart and dark fungal staining. Moderately difficult to saw.
Machining may show slight chipping as a result of interlocked grain. Generally, however, dressed surfaces are of average or better quality. Overall, working properties are reasonable for a hard, heavy timber.
EXTERIOR GENERAL, rails, PACKING, heavy packing, CONTAINERS, chemical storage
