Distemonanthus laxus Oliv.
The tree reaches a height of 30 to 40 m. The bole is reasonably straight, clear and cylindrical. The trunk diameter attains 80 to 150 cm, over the rather thin, weakly developed buttresses. Log is banned for international trading.(Cameroon)
Distemonanthus benthamianus is found in the primary forests of West Africa.
Widely but sparsely distributed throughout West Africa, mainly in Cameroon, Ghana and Nigeria.
Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 150 to 200 micras (medium). Occasionally vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to int Axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Occasionally axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Axial parenchyma aliform. Occasionally axial parenchyma confluent. Axial parenchyma storied. Prismatic crystals in chambered 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays storied. Rays 1 to 4 seriate. Body ray cells procumbent with one row of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-III). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The sapwood is straw-yellow. The heartwood is yellow to yellowish brown, it is fairly distinct from heartwood. The silver figure is fine, slightly lustrous.
