Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

It is an evergreen, dioecious, small to fairly large tree up to 36 m tall. The bole is often irregular, branchless for up to 24 m, up to 100 cm in diameter. It is often fluted or channeled and/or with short to steep buttresses at base.

Natural Habitat

This common and often gregarious tree occurs in primary rain forests on ridges and ridge sites, from low altitudes to 1,500 m of altitude.

Natural Distribution

Throughout New Guinea and Solomon Islands and known from Malaysia, Kalimantan, Borneo, Sumatra, the Philippines and Moluccas( Maluku Islands).

Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Simple perforation plates. Intervessel pits large, 10 micras or more. Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Occasionally apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Occasionally prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. 5 to 8 cells per parenchy Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Prismatic crystals in radial alignment in procumbent ray cells (chambered cells). Body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-I). Occasionally body ray cells procumbent with m Occasionally fibers with distinctly bordered pits.
