Description Of The Tree
Botanical Description
The tree reaches a height of 16 to 23 m. The bole may be up to 3 to 5 m in length in mature specimens. The trunk diameter attains 100 cm.
Natural Habitat
Fillaeopsis discophora occurs in dry Mediterranean regions and in tropical forest. It prefers deep sandy soils.
Natural Distribution
West, Central, East Africa, from Senegal to Ethiopia, from Kenya to Mozambique, to Angola and Namibia.

Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more (large). Vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Axial parenchyma lozenge-aliform. Prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Rays non-storied. Rays 1 to 4 seriate. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Body ray cells procumbent with one row of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-III). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.
