The tree reaches a height of 30 m. The bole is cylindrical, unbuttressed, straight, and may be up to 20 m. The trunk diameter attains 70 to 100 cm.
Pachypodanthium staudtii is usually found in small groups. It occurs in dense riparian forests, preferably on sandy or swampy surfaces.
Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 150 to 200 micras (medium). Non-vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel Axial parenchyma scalariform. Non-crystals in axial parenchyma cells. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Axial parenchyma bands over 4 per mm. Rays less than 4 per mm (rare). Rays non-storied. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Oil and/or mucilage cells associated with the axial and/or ray parenchyma (idioblasts). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The heartwood is red brown or yellow brown with an occasional olive tinge and stripes, it is not clearly demarcated.
