It is an evergreen, medium-sized to large trees up to 48 m tall. The bole is columnar, up to 115 cm in diameter, without buttresses.
This species is reported to grow in primary forests, on sandy or loamy soils, up to 300 m of altitude.
Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels in radial multiples of 4 or more common. Occasionally vessels with colored deposits. Tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Vessel-ray pits reticulate and/or foraminate. Simple perforation plates. Intervesse Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Crystal sand. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. Occasionally 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Axial parenchyma in narrow bands on l 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Ray height more than 1 mm. Body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-I). Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The heartwood is reddish-brown, not sharply demarcated from the pale red sapwood.

The grain is straight, occasionally wavy.
The texture varies from rather fine to coarse.
It is moderately durable for interior use and non-durable to moderately durable when exposed to the weather or in contact with the ground.

Ease of Drying: The wood dries fairly slowly. Boards 15 mm thick take 2.5 to 4 months to air dry from green to 15% moisture content. Drying Defects: Slight bowing and staining are reported. Kiln Schedules: Schedule recommended for Litsea.
The wood is soft and easy to work.
