Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

It is a medium sized to large tree, up to 40 m tall, with a columnar bole up to 100 cm of diameter. The buttresses are absent or small, sometimes with pneumatophore roots.

Natural Habitat

Madhuca motleyana is common in freshwater and peat swamp forests, generally near the sea level.

Non Timber Uses

The fat present in the seeds is used for human consumption.

Vessels in diagonal and/or radial pattern. Vessels in radial multiples of 4 or more common. Tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Vessel-ray pits reticulate and/or foraminate. Vascular/vasicentric tracheides present. Simple perforation plates. Axial parenchyma in narrow bands on lines up to 3 cells wide. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays exclusively uniseriate. Silica bodies in the ray cells. Fibers very thick walled.
