It is a fairly large tree up to 40 m tall, with a straight, cylindrical bole up to 80 cm in diameter.
Vessels in diagonal and/or radial pattern. Tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Vessel-ray pits reticulate and/or foraminate. Simple perforation plates. Intervessel pits medium, 7 to 10 micras. Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Axial parenchyma reticulate. Prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. Body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-I). Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.

The heartwood is pinkish-brown to reddish-brown and only moderately distinct from the lighter sapwood.

The texture is moderately fine and even.
It is rated as only moderately durable. It is prone to termite attack and susceptible to fungal attack, but not to powder-post beetles.

Wood of this species is easy to fair. Nyatoh wood is reported to gum up the saw-teeth.
The fine grain and color make it suitable for veneer. It can be peeled at a 91 degrees peeling angle without pretreatment. Sometimes the wood is figured and then the veneer can be very attractive, especially when radially sliced.
