Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

It is a small to medium tree, rarely exceeding 33 m high, sometimes with thick buttresses or a fluted base.

Natural Habitat

Most Barringtonia species are found in evergreen primary or secondary forests, growing at altitudes up to 600 m.

Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Vessel-ray pits reticulate and/or foraminate. Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. Intervessel pits large, 10 micras or more. Axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Axial parenchyma confluent. Prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial parenchyma cells. Axial parenchyma bands more than 3 cells wide. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Body ray cells procumbent with one row of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-III). Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.

General Wood Description

Color

The heartwood is cream-white, pale yellow-brown, sometimes with reddish tinge, not differentiated from the sapwood.

COLOR INDEX (1=Black, 7=Light yellow,white)

6

Grain

This timber usually has straight or interlocked grain.

Texture

Texture is usually fine.

Natural Durability

It is perishable and vulnerable to decay and insect attack.

Natural durability index (1= Very high durability, 7=Vey low durability)

5

Resistance To Impregnation

The sapwood is easily preserved, but the heartwood presents a moderate penetration.

Drying Defects

Drying Defects: Care is needed during seasoning, especially with the heavier timber, as backsawn boards tend to check. Kiln Schedules: Kiln drying of heavier grades of eucalyptus timber is only practicable in boards up to 25 mm in thickness. It is strongly recommended to air dry the wood to 30% moisture content prior to kiln drying.
