It is a medium-sized to fairly large tree, up to 40 m tall with straight bole branchless for up to 22 m and up to 50 cm in diameter, fluted at the base, with low or without buttresses.
Vatica rassak is found on riverbanks and dry ridges up to 500 m of altitude.
Wood diffuse porous. Vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 more than 20 (very abundant). Intervessel pits scalariform. Vascular/vasicentric tracheides present. Simple perforation plates. Multiple perforation plates. Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Axial parenchyma confluent unilateral paratracheal. Sheath cells. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.

The heartwood is reddish-brown to brown with a green tinge, darkening on exposure to dark reddish-brown. The sapwood is light yellowish-brown, clearly differentiated in fresh logs, but less sharply defined when dry.

The wood has a average service life in contact with the ground of only 2 years. It is not resistant neither against marine borers, nor to pin hole borers.
