The tree reaches a height of 13 to 20 m. The bole may be up to 4 to 6 m in length. The trunk diameter attains 150 cm.
Isoberlinia doka is a gregarious species, it grows in the dry zone savanna forest.
Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 150 to 200 micras (medium). Vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits Axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Axial parenchyma thick lozenge-aliform. Prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays non-storied. Rays exclusively uniseriate. Body ray cells procumbent with one row of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-III). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The sapwood is silver with red tinges. The heartwood is red to light brown, it is not clearly demarcated.
Straight or interlocked, sometimes with an influence on further processing operations. Interlocked grain is high but not frequent.
The texture of the wood is frequently coarse.
This species is low in luster.
Heartwood is sensible to Lyctus attacks.
