It is a small to medium sized tree, up to 30 m tall and 65 cm diameter, with a straight bole. It is usually fluted at the base.
This species prefers well drained soils from the lowlands to montane forests, up to 2,100 m of altitude.
Occasionally vessels in tangential pattern. Occasionally vessels in dendritic pattern. Occasionally vessels in diagonal and/or radial pattern. Occasionally wood semi-ring porous and/or ring porous. Occasionally vessels in radial multiples of 4 or more common. Axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Two cells per parenchyma strand. Axial parenchyma in narrow bands on lines 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Occasionally rays less than 4 per mm (rare). Occasionally rays of two distinct sizes. Occasionally larger rays more than 4 seriate. Occasionally body ray cells procumbent with one row of upright and/or square marginal cells (Krib Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The wood is pale brown, pale yellow or yellowish-brown.

The grain is frequently interlocked.
Texture is usually medium to coarse.
This species is fairly lustrous.
The heartwood is very resistant to dry-wood termites. The sapwood is resistant to Lyctus.
