It is a medium sized tree, up to 30 m tall, with diameters up to 100 cm. The bole is straight and cylindrical, 5 to 20 m long.
Ternstroemia gymnanthera occurs in mixed broad-leaved forests, up to 1,800 m of altitude.
In Taiwan, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, China and Japan.
Vessels per mm2 more than 20 (very abundant). Wood diffuse porous. Vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 micras or less (very small). Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. Multiple perforatio Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Axial parenchyma confluent unilateral paratracheal. Over 9 cells per parenchyma strand. Ray height more than 1 mm. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays 1 to 4 seriate. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Occasionally sheath cells. Fibers with distinctly bordered pits. Non-septate fibers.

The wood is red-brown, occasionally purple-red color, not differentiated from the paler sapwood.
