It is a fairly large tree up to 40 m tall, and 115 cm in diameter. The bole is straight and cylindrical, usually short, but sometimes up to 23 m long, with many large buttresses up to 2 m high.
Terminalia copelandii occurs mainly in lowland primary swamp forests and beach regions, but in Papua New Guinea it may be found form the coast to 400 m above sea level.
It is never common, but occurs over a wide range of areas in Sumatra, Kalimantan, the Philippines, Sulawesi, Irian Jaya, Papua New Guinea down to the Solomon Islands.
Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more (large). Occasionally tyloses common. Vestured pits. Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. Intervessel pits medium, 7 to 10 micras. Axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Axial parenchyma bands more than 3 cells wide. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays of two distinct sizes. Ray height more than 1 mm. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

It has no taste or odor.
The sapwood is pale yellow, not clearly differentiated from light brown heartwood.

Straight or, rarely, wavy grain is found in this species.
The wood is mostly medium in texture.
It is very durable for interior use in tropics, but perishable when exposed to weather.

The heartwood is resistant to impregnation with preservatives, even under pressure, but the sapwood is permeable.
