Tree size is reported to attain a height of about 18m in the average, with a trunk diameter that can reach up to 45 cm over the buttresses, which can be up to 6 m long. Usually develops a fluted stem.
This species occurs in Central and northern South America down to Perú.
Wood diffuse porous. Vessels solitary and in short radial multiples. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 to 150 micras (small). Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. Paratracheal axial parenchyma thin vasicentric. Axial parenchyma reticulate. Siliceous bodies in the axial parenchyma cells. Axial parenchyma in narrow bands on lines up to 3 cells wide. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Silica bodies in the ray cells. Prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The wood is not clearly differentiated, the heartwood is pale yellow.
